DESCRIPTION: He survived a terrifying crocodile attack off Australia’s Queensland coast, blood poisoning in the middle of the Pacific, malaria in Indonesia and China, and acute mountain sickness in the Himalayas. He was hit by a car and left for dead with two broken legs in Colorado, and incarcerated for espionage on the Sudan-Egypt border.
The first in a thrilling adventure trilogy, Dark Waters charts one of the longest, most gruelling, yet uplifting and at times irreverently funny journeys in history, circling the world using just the power of the human body, hailed by the London Sunday Times as “The last great first for circumnavigation.”
But it was more than just a physical challenge. Prompted by what scientists have dubbed the “perfect storm” as the global population soars to 8.3 billion by 2030, adventurer Jason Lewis used The Expedition to reach out to thousands of schoolchildren, calling attention to our interconnectedness and shared responsibility of an inhabitable Earth for future generations.
THANKS: Including the circumnavigation itself, the expedition project is now 20 years in the making. Thousands of people have contributed in myriad ways to make it happen. Special thanks for bringing this story to the written page go to Kenny Brown (photos), Tammie Stevens (editor), Rob Antonishen (maps), and Anthony DiMatteo (editing). Thanks also to all who read and gave feedback to early drafts.
Sounds amazing and love the cover! I will try to read it on my next trip and post a book review.
Thank you for the positive feedback, Juliet. If you’d be interested in posting a book review, may we send you a comp copy?

Hey Jason, thanks for liking some of my blog posts! I am new to the blogging world and decided a couple of weeks ago to start writing out some of my travel diaries – going back 8 years! 🙂 I followed you a few days ago after reading a funny post you made (the ship biscuits!). Then I saw in my news feed that you liked my Argentina stories then I was thinking I know your name from somewhere – then I realised it – I heard about you years ago on the news and I was regularly on your website (expedition360.com) in the past! When you completed the expedition I was often thinking will you ever publish a book?!! And now I see you are! Congratulations! I was wondering about a book because I love reading adventure travel literature. Particularly human-powered adventures. My favourite being a not so well known book called “Against the wind: pedalling for a pint from Japan to Ireland” by Yasuyuki Ozeki. I think your books might beat it!! I really can’t wait to read them! Thanks again for liking my posts! There are more to come! 🙂
Thanks for the follow. Yes, it’s taken what seems to be an unseemly amount of time writing up the story of the Expedition 360, but now it’s all done, in three parts. The journey prepared me for the writing of it: both were equally hellish in their own ways. Enjoyed your blog posts. Will have to check out that book by Ozeki. Sounds a hoot!
It is a great read! I fully recommend you checking it out! It is very inspiring! I am looking forward to your books and checking out your blog posts. Well done on completing three books! That is a challenge in itself!
Jason! I went to your presentation at Poor Richards…bought the book, and then breezed through it in two days! You’re a great writer. I’m pumped for the next one. Do you have a guestimate of when you’ll be releasing it?
Hi Adam. Thanks for coming along to PR, and so glad that you enjoyed the first one. Part two should be out within the month. Sorry for the delay – assume it’s okay to drop you a note when it’s available?

I happen to catch the last 20 min of a tv show where these guys were riding their motorcycles across Africa and they ran into Jason Lewis on a bike. I looked him up immediately to see if it was true. I found your book, read a lot of great reviews on Dark Waters But I have been waiting to read Dark Waters to see when the next book is going to be available. I don’t want to get all excited about this amazing adventure and have to wait too long. Any one know when the next book is coming out? I looked for it online and can’t find any info.
Hi Victoria. The second part of the trilogy will be out the end of this September. Actually, the book is going to print as we speak but takes a month or so to appear in sales channels. Can we let you know when it’s available? Thanks – Kevin (BillyFish Books).
